For the adventurous who love the outdoor, active life, then the Drakensberg Mountains are a must on your travel itinerary to South Africa. These mountains, which stretch for hundreds of miles are characterised by spectacular scenery and high peaks - the highest is Thabana Ntlenyana at over 11,000 feet. The area is also home to numerous resorts. The name Drakensberg translates as "the Dragon mountains" although the Zulu "uKhahlamba" or "barrier of spears" gives you a clue to the terrain.
This whole area is perfect for those who love mountain biking, hiking, horse riding, photography and there are even a number of golf resorts for golfing enthusiasts. The weather can change within a day so you are always advised to check the weather report before setting out on a hike or cycle ride and to carry a warm set of clothing, waterproofs, a drink and snacks should your journey take longer due to the onset of wet, cold or misty conditions. Health bars and a packs of
biltong are considered good options as they are easy to carry and still edible if squashed in the side-pocket of a packed ruck-sac.
